Choosing the Best Car Rental in St Martin
On an island this size, the rental company you pick matters more than it would anywhere else: it decides whether your holiday starts at the airport or in a queue, and whether a problem takes ten minutes or three phone calls to sort out. Here are the five questions that genuinely make the difference when looking for the best car rental in St Martin — and, openly, how we answer them.
1. Where do you collect the car, and where can you return it?
This is the first criterion, and the most underrated. One island with two territories, two airports, and accommodation scattered between Grand-Case, Marigot, Orient Bay and the Dutch side: depending on the company, you collect the car where they are based, or where you are.
On our side, handover and return work from a dozen points across both sides of the island — both airports, several marinas and a range of hotels and resorts. In practice, you can collect at Juliana airport on arrival and drop the car at your Grand-Case hotel when you leave, or the other way round.
Details for each airport are on our dedicated pages: SXM Juliana airport on the Dutch side, and Grand-Case airport on the French side.
2. Can you drive on both sides of the island?
A question that comes up constantly, and it deserves a clear answer: yes, movement between the French and Dutch sides is free, with no border post. But check that your rental agreement allows it — that is the kind of detail you find out at the worst possible moment.
Our vehicles go anywhere on the island, with no territorial restriction. That is the bare minimum when you are based here: we know you will sleep on one side and have dinner on the other. How the island works is set out on our St Martin, one island two sides page.
3. What is actually included?
This is where the unpleasant surprises hide. A listing can show an attractive rate and then fill out at the counter: insurance, additional driver, excess, mileage. Before booking, ask what is included — and above all what is not.
We would rather be clear at booking than at handover. All conditions are shown before you confirm, and our FAQ covers the points that come up most often.
4. Is the vehicle checked with you?
A rental car lives on narrow roads, tight car parks and sand. Scratches happen: what matters is that they are recorded together, at pick-up and at return, rather than discovered afterwards on an invoice.
We walk around the vehicle with you at handover and at return. It is simpler for everyone, and it avoids the long-distance argument that suits nobody.
5. Who answers when something goes wrong?
A flat tyre on the road to Orient Bay, a tired battery on the way back from the beach: that is the day the real difference between two companies shows. With an international platform, you call a contact centre; with a local agency, you call someone who is on the island.
We are an independent company based in St Martin. That is not a slogan: it means a reachable contact who knows the roads you are describing and can come out. You can reach us through our contact page.
What about price?
It matters, of course. But over a week's rental, the gap between two quotes is quickly swallowed by add-ons, time lost on arrival, or an extra trip to collect the car. The right instinct is to compare what is included, not just the headline figure — which is exactly what the four questions above let you do.
Which vehicle for which trip
Once the company is chosen, there is still the model. A city car is plenty for a couple and parks anywhere; travelling as a group, our 8 and 9 seater vans save you taking two cars; for rougher access, the 4x4 and SUV range covers it. Everything is on our vehicles page.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, especially in high season. Arrivals cluster around a few flights and availability is decided in advance, particularly for larger vehicles, always the rarest in any fleet.
Yes. Our handover and return points cover both sides, and you can mix them: pick up on the Dutch side, drop off on the French side or the other way round. Give us both locations when booking.
It depends what you are after. A platform offers a wide catalogue; a local company offers someone on the ground who knows the island and can step in. On an island where you can be stuck twenty minutes from anywhere, that second point weighs more than it looks.
You call us directly. Being on the island means we can come out or arrange a replacement without going through a middleman.
Yes — just tell us when booking and provide that person's licence, so they are covered in the same way as the main driver.
